LIFE'S LITTLE DETAILS

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES
Happy Wednesday, m' dears! The photos in today's post summarize quite perfectly what we've been up to lately. We had another round of visitors from Missouri (in-laws part deux), made our way to the beach in Lewes, stalked bullfrogs and butterflies in the backyard, ate a handful of celebratory carbs (the best part about hosting guests!), spent hours watching Captain Underpants on Netflix, and now we've got a stack of summery snapshots taken from the perspective of a four year old to show for it. Max will start preschool this fall and I can't help but feel sad that Summer is coming to a close sooner than I expected. I'm grateful for this slower pace and zero plans thing.

How's your Summer shaping up? Spill the deetz, would you?!

THURSDAY'S THOUGHTS

VIA JENESSA WAIT

FEELING: I woke up Monday and felt a dire need to clean Dodi's fish bowl after watching Max feed the resident Betta that morning. I honestly couldn't remember the last time we switched out the water and there was slimy scum visible on the fish's submarine. Ew. I suppose cleaning the fish bowl was one of those easy to-do's that would make me feel like I was in charge of the week ahead. WRONG! Five hours AFTER scrubbing the fish bowl and submarine, I was vacuuming Max's room (he was at a hair appointment with Flyboy) and Dodi was floating at the top of his bowl. Gulp! WORST MOM EVER. I immediately sent FB a text, explained what had happened, asked if he could share the bad news with Max, and then suggested the two of them go directly to Petco to purchase a replacement. Lucky for me, Max got over the loss pretty quickly. Phew! Bob is the newest addition to our family, and I promise I won't resort to any harsh chemicals the next time I feel the need to deep clean the fish bowl and its accessories.

THANKFUL FOR: Earlier this year, Grace Bonney announced that Design Sponge would be closing its doors in August after 15 years of blogging. I was initially shocked and saddened by the news, as it's been a source of inspiration to me for over a decade now, but I was also very impressed that Bonney was bold enough to take this next step. The news is bittersweet to say the least, but I feel especially grateful for the chance to attend her farewell party at Terrain on August 2nd. Grace is one of the primary reasons I began blogging eight years ago. In a lot of ways, she helped me define my own personal style and I hope to thank her for influencing me at a time when the blogosphere still felt really genuine and had little to do with dollar signs. It's certainly the end of an era; her presence will be greatly missed.

THINKING ABOUT: I don't think we've had a chance to discuss this via the blog and I feel it's absolutely necessary for us to move forward together as Bravo besties. You guys, Vicki Gunvalson has been demoted to friend status on RHOC. WTF? I know this was announced a few weeks ago, but I'm still not over it. My mind is BLOWN! Sure, she's nutty as hell, but she's the OG. What was Andy Cohen thinking when he made this decision? There's got to be more to the story and I feel like viewers deserve some transparency. Seriously though, how did we get stuck with Emily and Gina??

LISTENING TO: On Tuesday around lunch time, I was peacefully folding laundry upstairs when Max yelled, "Mommy!! A groundhog is destroying your plants. Come quickly!!" I peeked out our bedroom window and the kid was right—a woodchuck was indeed stripping my Sweet Potato Vine and he moved on to the Zinnias. Noooooooo! Beyond livid, I flew down the stairs, instructed Max to eat his lunch, and ran out to the berm to chase the furry nuisance away. I hadn't put much thought into how effective my scare tactics would be or if he'd fight back for that matter, but I certainly owe the neighborhood bunnies an apology because I've been blaming them for everything the past few months. Oops! Now we're left Googling ways to trap a Groundhog (What we'll do with it, I'm not sure?!) or deter them from destroying the rest of our plants and I'm reminded I'm not cut out for country living or animals. Clearly. Maybe the spray I used to clean the fish bowl will do the trick? Calm down, I'm kidding. Kind of.

WATCHING: I've never met a Meryl Streep character that I didn't adore—that is, until she played the role of Mary Louise Wright in the second season of Big Little Lies. Whoa! I swear that woman is PURE EVIL. Any thoughts?!

EATING: A week ago, I lamented on Instagram about my recent hair loss and the number of supplements I'm currently taking to encourage regrowth (Nutrafol and collagen, where you at?). Most of the people I've talked to and articles I've read suggest an increase in protein. Now I feel like a maniac searching for all the ways in which I can improve upon my daily intake and I'm trying my best to keep track of how much I'm eating. Isn't getting older the worst?!

LOVING: We spent some time seaside in Lewes last Sunday and I'm fairly certain we were the only ones without an umbrella. Um, awkward. Getting accustomed to beach life on the East Coast is certainly different than what we were used to in Hawaii, but any time spent by the ocean is good for the soul and I think we could use more of it. Since the weekend traffic wasn't as bad as we thought it would be, I'm already looking forward to our next visit and you can bet it will include THIS striped number—because it's bound to offer some seriously snazzy shade.

How are you feeling today? What are you up to? Thanks for stopping by!!

TEN CREATIVES TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM

]TEN CREATIVES TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM:
  1. Sophie Treppendahl // If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd immediately commission a piece by Treppendahl. It would include my trusty Breton-striped shirt for obvious reasons. This series by Sophie is my personal fave!
  2. Sami Cronk // Thanks to the Quirk Gallery in Richmond, I was introduced to Cronk's feed. You could say she had me at HELLO when she featured artwork that included Trader Joe's Peonies in a plastic cup from McDonald's. How could something this simple turn into a piece of art so cheeky and striking?! Gimme more of that.
  3. Sarah Boyts Yoder // Seeing Sarah's work in person is definitely on my bucket list (she's from VA, so it's bound to happen!). Her abstract collage style has evolved since I began following her a few years ago, in addition to the techniques she uses to create her mixed media paintings. I love when she shares a glimpse of the process.
  4. Ali Nelson // A champion of mental health and cheerleader of introspection, Ali shares lessons learned and then makes them into a beautiful background so you can save it to your phone for whenever you might need it.
  5. Jordan Sondler // Take a gander at Jordan's feed and it feels like someone got inside my head and started doodling all my thoughts and emotions. It's equal parts gratifying and creepy (but in the most adorable way!).
  6. Laurie Fisher // The sight of Fisher's artwork grouped together in her studio can take any "meh" day to marvelous in an instant. Trust me, I speak from experience. You might find yourself scrolling through a sea of curated predictability and then BAM!! Her paintings on their own will take your breath away, but there's something about seeing several of them displayed in a grouping that is truly magical. It fills my heart with joy.
  7. Lucy Litman // Her #pantoneposts and #actuallytrashyoutfit pictures are great and all, but it's the paintbrush series that really stands out the most in Litman's coloriffic feed. The messages are honest and encouraging.
  8. Christina Zimpel // It's not the first time I've mentioned this Brooklyn-based artist on m' blog and it probably won't be the last either. Described as shy and behind the scenes, art certainly serves as her alter ego. Wouldn't you agree? Just look at the broad brushstrokes and bold splashes of intense color. Eek, and her use of pink!!
  9. Melanie Johnsson // I swear she's part illustrator and part personal therapist, but I doubt she's aware of that last title. Ha! Her color palette series and inspirational quotes are just a few of the reasons I began following her. I wonder if she knows that her lettering is also an effective life coach for yours truly??
  10. Misterver // Waikiki's "mystery observer" documents beach fashion and local life with a quirky composition. His knack for detail rivals Andy Spade, which in my opinion is the ultimate compliment. Accounts like this have encouraged me to look through life's lens differently. When you pay attention, there's beauty in everything.

Have you stumbled upon any new inspiring artists lately? Do tell.

LIFE'S LITTLE DETAILS

"THE DETAILS ARE NOT THE DETAILS. THEY MAKE THE DESIGN." — CHARLES EAMES

Happy Thursday, m' dears! Let's get straight to the Delaware deetz. A lot has transpired since we last touched base:
  • Flyboy left for a week-long trip (that eventually turned into two weeks), and it included several pitstops in Hawaii. Sitting next to Jon Lovitz on Waikiki Beach and sporting a tacky aloha shirt with his coworkers were just a few highlights from his stay. Lucky for us, he came home with Maui Onion Chips, trinkets from Olive and Oliver, along with a mean case of jet lag that gave us all a great excuse to take long naps. After being home for a whopping three days, would you believe he's gone again? Yeah, I know.
  • As some of you might remember, we planned on having my other set of in-laws visit us for the 4th of July; however, they ended up getting pesky chest colds and had to postpone their trip. It ended up being for the best, as FB wouldn't have made it back home in time to join us anyway.
  • Despite plans changing and frequent good-byes, I'm left feeling more grateful than ever that FB got to return from his deployment like he did at the beginning of May. This fall is going to be a busy one for us, and I'm not sure how we would have fit in all the visits and whatnot had he returned in early August as originally planned. Things always work out and sometimes for the better. Who knew, right?!
  • When life starts to get a little unpredictable, I can always rely on Max's imagination and curiosity as my constant. In the past two weeks, we've added tin foil solar panels to his wooden barn, created a LEGO Chinook, dabbled with upcycling by creating our very own robot out of recyclables, and plotted all the ways in which we could get to Papua New Guinea, to learn more about the Swallowtail Butterfly—his latest obsession, thanks to a book we checked out at the library.
  • Remember when we got two truckloads of dirt delivered last October with the hopes of adding a berm to our backyard? Y'all, it's filling in quite nicely and brings me more joy than I anticipated!! Call me crazy, but I look forward to checking it out every morning because I swear something new happens every night. Right now it's the Zinnias (from my aunt's seeds!!) that are really stealing the show. I adore the bright colors and Max loves the fact that they attract ALLLLL the butterflies and honey bees.
  • I wasn't sure if I was going to post this week or not because I wanted to soak up all the quality time with FB. But then we learned he'd be leaving again for a quick trip, so I cooked up one swelluva Love List in a snap, and I couldn't possibly wait another week before hitting publish on this one. Get excited!

Well, that's all I've got for now. How the heck are you? I'm dying to know.
We've got our fingers crossed Flyboy comes home this weekend so we can hit the beach. Huzzah!
