Insta-Love!

Instagram is my favorite productivity killer and creative instigator. It's one way in which I like to delight in the ordinary; it makes me stop and relish the beauty that is my life. I may be dusting around the house and I see a beautiful sunrise — "Quick, go get your camera (err, I mean phone)." I'll run around Lil' Puna like a stressed-out nut job and I see the smiling face of Beesly or Tripp snoozing and snoring in the corner — "Quick, go get your camera (err, I mean phone)." I might throw together an outfit I'm proud of, or style my knick-knacks in a way that would only make mom beam — "Quick, go get your camera (err, I mean phone)." I'll find myself WAITING for the next Sunday when Flyboy's next to me and we're relaxing seaside. When this happens, I feel a sense of bliss — "Quick, go get your camera (err, I mean phone)." I want to capture the moment. I'm such a visual person, I don't want to forget how I felt in that instance. When the minutiae of daily life starts to consume me, I turn to this happy album brimming with photos, or reminders of life's blessings.

And while I know there are a lot of opinions about Instagram and how these sorts of social media outlets tend to make others feel as though their lives are less than perfect, I disagree. Simply put, haters gonna hate. Just as much as I love snapping little moments and vignettes from my daily life, which allow me to focus on all that's good and pretty, I simply adore seeing life from the perspective of others. So many of us turn to Instagram because we're visually stimulated. I mean, is there anything better than a well-curated snapshot? Some of my favorite Instagrammers inspire me to look at life from various perspectives and to hone in on specific details. There's an art to beautiful images and I absolutely admire the way others capture life with an emphasis on light, movement, etc.

Alright, alright, I've rambled enough.
Here are a dozen Instagram accounts whose pictures make me giddy:

  • LADYANK // A J.Crew Stylist and probably the most precious prego I've ever seen (next to Kate, obvi)!
  • CHARTREUSETWIST // She's a DIY queen, and I'm a HUGE fan of her blog.
  • FABKSTYLE // Kelly has a beautiful eye for design and captures details impeccably.
  • NORTHWESTMOMMY // Images of Max, the Newfoundland, make my heart so incredibly happy!
  • COLOURBLOC // A self-proclaimed gallery wall enthusiast and pop-of-color believer. Perfection.
  • MRSLAIRDYPANTS // She's the kind of stylish gal you'd want to spend the afternoon with.
  • THELADYMIMOSA // This lady takes Kate Spade's "Live Color Fully" motto seriously, and I love it!
  • WAITINGONMARTHA // Mandy has a zeal for life that's contagious and an eye for all things fabulous.
  • ADASHOFDETAILS // I dare you not to adore Ali. Of course, her blog is equally incredible!
  • NOTES_FROM_MONROE // There's no shortage of pink! Her photos are GORGEOUS.
  • PENCILSHAVINGS // Rachel has an aesthetic and sense of creativity I truly admire.
  • TULIPSANDFLIGHTSUITS // Mary is incredibly genuine. She's the kind of person you'd feel so blessed to call your friend. I just love the way she captures life as a new family.

Do you have a favorite Instagram account that I should know about?!

Art I Heart: Paul Behnke

Paintings by Paul Behnke
Happy Tuesday, m' dears! I hope you had a fabulous long weekend. Ours was splendiferous, but it's made getting back into the swing of the weekly routine slightly painful. I figured a little visual sunshine and a splash of color would be much-needed as we kick off the (short) work week. Much to my delight, I didn't have to look far for inspiration for today's post. I stumbled upon the work of Paul Behnke recently, and I was absolutely awestruck by his slapdash use of color. For approximately thirty minutes, I got lost Googling the artist and drooling over his magnificent pieces. Picking a favorite was near to impossible, so I decided to narrow it down to my top seven picks.

Happy Memorial Day!

Amid the fun in the sun and barbecued goodness, let's not forget the deeper meaning of this long weekend — the importance of freedom and remembrance. Give thanks and honor those who gave their lives to protect our country.

Lurve Loave Luff

Let's get right to it, shall we?
Here's what made me feel all twitterpated, smile contagiously, giggle uncontrollably, etc.
  • Salted Chocolate-Pretzel Peanut Butter Cookies // These look insanely delicious! They've been added to my ongoing list of things to-bake. Not to mention, the Oh, Ladycakes blog is loaded with visual eye candy. It's absolutely GORGEOUS! Bookmark it, my friends.
  • Gin! Vintage Playing Cards // One of my favorite sites to visit for graphic inspiration is Cubicle Refugee. I stumbled upon these cards this past week and they have Ashley written ALL over them.
  • Gin & Tonic // It's a three-day weekend, so you'll want to know how to make the perfect Gin and Tonic. Flyboy, if you're reading this, we need more Hendrick's.
  • Bicycle Pillow // Darling, isn't it? I've got throw pillows on the brain because we'll basically need to replace all of ours once we move to Texas. Our current collection has been loved by the sun.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan // You know how I said I was stalking the National Stationery Show. Well, it paid off! I discovered a company called The Social Type, and I'm positive you'll love their fine paper goods. I'm especially excited about their line of matchboxes, which will be available in August. Woop woop!
  • Collection Bow Pumps in Stripe // I've got my eye on you! I don't even wear heels, but I do need these!
  • Confetti Print // Earlier this week, while I was prepping my blog post, I ordered this new print from Sugar Paper. Can you ever have enough gold confetti? Look at today's graphic, and there's your answer!
  • Holy Mackerel! // I just adore this print created by Twamies.
  • Ikat Cocktail Napkins // They're quite lovely, but the price tag is rather steep. This is one of those moments my sewing machine would come in quite handy. Thank goodness for Pinterest and Google, I'm sure I can find something cheaper.
  • Happy 5th Anniversary // Hey, there's a good looking couple! On Saturday, we'll celebrate our fifth year of marriage. Thanks for all the love and laughter, Flyboy! I love doing life with you.
  • Polka Dots & Scallops // More colorful goodness from the ever so talented, Steffie Broccoli.
  • Eyelet Dot Tank // The temperature on Lil' Puna is rising, and I like to imagine turning down the air conditioner right about now. Wait, we don't have one... I guess it's time to bust out the tank tops!
  • Monogram Letter // How about a bold and playful personalization for your gallery wall?
  • Alexander Henry Fabric // This floral pattern is magnificent. It's just so happy!
  • Support Oklahoma // A helpful list of ways we can help Oklahoma Tornado Victims shared by Whoorl.
  • Gift Card Giveaway // Congratulations Aynsley Connell! You're the winner of the $50 J.Crew Gift Card.

Cheers to a snazzy Memorial Day weekend!

Thursday's Thoughts

There's nothing incredibly special about today's post. I just thought it was time we take a moment and discuss how precious Kate makes pregnancy appear. Did we expect anything less? Of course, not! My obsession with the Duchess of Cambridge is nothing new. Throughout most of middle school, I believed I might marry Prince William. Any time we'd visit London, I kept a special eye out for my favorite royal. These days, I find myself more smitten with Catherine than William. Does it really get any more adorable than this? I mean, really!!!

At age 27 and having been married for almost five years, we're beginning to get a lot of questions and not-so-subtle hints from family members regarding children. I get it. They're excited! From time to time, I like to humor myself and think about what it might be like when we get to that next chapter. Sometimes the daydreaming leads to giddy smiles, but more often than not, I get incredibly freaked out! I think I'm mostly amused with cute baby clothes and nursery decor than anything else. I know that sounds awful, but how do you know when it's time to start a family? Are you ever really ready? I have a handful of friends that have moved on to this next chapter and they've made it look so effortless. As a worrywart and control freak, I just feel confused. I wish there was some sort of magical light up board to signal "It's Time!" Do you know where we can get one of those? Right now, I think I could just settle as an honorary aunt to Will and Kate's offspring. I would SO be the fun aunt!

Parcel & Post

Preppy Anchor // Always You // Hello Lovey // Grateful // Hello Sunshine //
I'm Pretty Lucky // Yes // Swiss Dot // Bright Stars // Dream Big Darling
All of the Instagram, Twitter, and blog buzz surrounding the National Stationery Show in New York City (happening NOW), leaves me feeling rather giddy. I have dreams of going one day. I'm not sure how or why, but I want to wear a fancy name tag and excitedly meander from booth to booth in awe of all the gorgeous paper products. I want to get an inside glimpse of what's coming up in the world of stationery, and I want to tell the various vendors just how much I love and admire their work. I'm certain a NSS visit would resemble heaven. I imagine there would be colorful discussions regarding washi tape, our love of all things gold foil, and we'd share a good chuckle about the unfortunate misspelling of stationery. All of this paper-related chitchat would occur over snazzy cocktails, of course!

It's fun to daydream, but I don't have any intentions of EVER choosing a favorite paperie. These days, my go-to shops are Rifle Paper Co. and Sugar Paper. I seem to have a not-so-secret love affair with both stationery rock stars. Their paper goods leave me feeling hot and bothered. In case you were unaware, it's DEFINITELY possible to feel this way about card stock. And while it's not the first time I've raved about both companies on m' blog, I just couldn't keep Sugar Paper's latest batch of beautiful paper goods to myself. You'll want to check it out! It will make you feel like you've got an all-access pass to the National Stationery Show. Bring your own cocktail and scroll away!

Life's Little Details

Here's a glimpse of what's been going on around Lil' Puna lately...
"The details are not the details. They make the design." — Charles Eames

Happy Monday, m' dears! I hope your week is off to a marvy start. I know you won't mind, but I'm going to keep today's post brief. After Sunday's triathlon, I'm spent! That's pretty ridiculous, as I was just a spectator and cheerleader, but we were up at 2 am to check-in at the triathlon by 4 am. Around mid-morning, I was ready to call it a day and go back to bed! Is it bad that I'm ready for next weekend already? I'm sure I'm not alone on this one!

A few insta-update notes...
  • Polka-Dot Perfection // It's quite silly to love an article of clothing so much, but I could live in this blazer.
  • Totes Adorbs // As if I couldn't adore Blair Ritchey more, I'm simply smitten with her canvas market tote. It's tagged along with me for groceries, but I'm pretty excited to take it to the beach next weekend.
  • For the Love of Peonies // I could get used to having these around all the time!
  • A Beautiful Mess // Have you downloaded the app yet? It's amaze balls. I just know you'll LOVE it!
  • Good Morning, Sunshine! // All of this waking up early the past week has been all right because it means that I've had the opportunity to take in Puna's lovely sunrises. I'll miss them when we leave!
  • Honolulu Triathlon // Flyboy killed it at Sunday's triathlon. I'm so proud of him! He managed to complete just under a mile swim, 25 miles of cycling, and 6.2-mile run in 2:35:49. I still think it's because of my stellar triathlon survival and preparedness kit. No biggie!
  • Gift Card Giveaway // There's still time to enter the giveaway. For more details, click here!

I hope you had a swell weekend.
What did you do that made you grin from ear to ear? Give it up. I'm dying to know!

Lurve Loave Luff

Let's get right to it, shall we?
Here's what made me feel all twitterpated, smile contagiously, giggle uncontrollably, etc.
  • Sweet Peonies // I got my first bouquet of Peonies last weekend! Wee! They were stunning, and I can't wait to get some more. Greedy, much?! They make me so incredibly giddy. The color is just mesmerizing.
  • Scallops by Steffie Brocoli // I thought Steffie's work couldn't be any sweeter, and then I realized she has an etsy shop with handmade pottery. Eek!
  • Swiss Dot Rectangular Platter // Be glad there's a computer screen and thousands of miles to separate us, or you probably would have got spit on by ME. You see, I get excited and I spit sometimes. It's terrible, but it's hereditary. My grandma and mom do it. When I was younger, I didn't think it could happen to me. I was sorely mistaken. It happens when we get excited, and this platter makes me happy with its perfect shape, color, and spots. Forgive me for spraying you with my jovial saliva.
  • Perforated Patent Flats // It's like a fiesta for your feet, and the price is spectacular!!
  • Spotted Cocktail Napkins // This may appear as a want, but Cocktail Corner at Lil' Puna says they're a need. Cocktail corner always wins!
  • DIY: Yarn Ball Wall Garland // Flyboy better watch out, or he might come home to a house filled with these just dangling about. Whenever I read about DIY projects like this, I have to remind myself that our house is not an Anthropologie store (sigh). I can't just hot glue spoons all over the kitchen walls and hang dangling balls of yarn from the ceiling. Shucks! I guess I'll bank it for later.
  • Create by Eva Black // "Take some time to create something because you love it." That's kind of the point behind blogging. Thanks for stopping by religiously and cheering me on in this effort.
  • Guava Twist Bracelet // I'm a big fan of 31 Bits and the mission behind their products. The summer collection is both bright and colorful. Check it out! I just know you'll love it.
  • Tiny Cosmetic Case // Can a girl ever have too many pouches? Nope, never.
  • The Best Peanut Butter Brownies // There's nothing quite as comforting as peanut butter and chocolate. These squares of decadence look rich and dense. I must make them!
  • Striped Notecards // Rifle Paper Co. and Splendid collaborated to make this gorgeous set of notecards. It screams summer stationery perfection.
  • Crocodile // Erica Salcedo's illustrations are incredibly adorable. Oh, how I love me some whimsical art!
  • Rain Room // If I won the lottery, I'd jet set to NYC and visit the new interactive exhibit at the MoMA called Rain Room. According to the website, "A field of falling water that pauses wherever a human body is detected, Rain Room offers visitors the experience of controlling the rain."Imagine the opportunity to unleash your inner Gene Kelly and sing and dance in the rain.
  • Gizoogle // I have no words to describe this. I just know that I laughed hysterically when I Gizoogled One Fine Day. Ridonkulous!!
  • One Fine Day on Facebook // Be sure to like the official One Fine Day page on Facebook. I feel so fancy with an official page!
Cheers to a snazzy weekend!
P.S. Stay tuned for a weekend surprise in tomorrow's bonus post!

A Toast to The Office

Cocktails & Carell:
The Falero, Aperol Spritzer, Havey Wallbanger, Northern Spy Cup, Sloe Gin Fizz, Singapore Sling, Vodka Thyme Lemonade
I started watching The Office in college after my parents insisted I tune in. Boy, I'm sure glad I did! I was instantly hooked after the first episode I watched: The Booze Cruise. My friends and I would meet every Thursday night to watch the mockumentary. If there wasn't a new episode, we'd watch reruns. Obsessed is an understatement. We had every line memorized, and no matter how many times we watched an episode, it still provoked big belly laughs. I'll never ever forget the roaring excitement that spread throughout the halls of our dorm when Pam and Jim first kissed. We loved the show so much, we even hosted our own Office Olympics. It was epic!

And just as the lives of the characters progressed, so did ours. Much like Pam, I was in a crummy relationship and managed to convince myself that Flyboy was just a really close friend. I was somewhat unaware that I was actually smitten and that "friend" would someday become my husband. Call me dense, but I didn't realize the similarities until my mom pointed them out to me. I denied it for the longest time, but she was right. As newlyweds transplanted to Texas, we didn't know anyone, but we found comfort in our trusty TV show. After a few months of settling down in Swell Rio, we thought it was time we add a Bernese Mountain Dog to our brood. On the 5.5 hour drive to pick her up, we decided that Pam's last name would be fitting. We named her Beesly! I told you we're obsessed.

There's just something so lovable about the painfully hilarious nine-to-fivers. The dialog was clever; I often found myself snorting or slapping the couch cushion because the one-liners were so stinking funny. Michael's antics, relationships with the staff, and his need to be liked were so endearing. Do I even need to mention the love-struck chemistry and awkward flirting between Jim and Pam? The show was refreshing!

Call me an emotional twit, but the thought of The Office series finale, which airs tonight, has made me snivel for the past few weeks. I must be a glutton for punishment, because I've gotten lost in a black hole of reruns and retrospective interviews with the cast and crew. I'm honestly not sure if I'm ready for tonight's episode; I'm not ready to close this chapter and say good-bye to a show that's meant so much to me. Of course, if you asked me this question a few years ago after Michael Scott's exit, I would have told you they should have ended the series right then and there. I was bitter, and I didn't think it would be the same without Steve Carell's beloved character. I took a year off, but Flyboy devotedly watched the show and convinced me to tune into the last season. Despite some of the ups and downs (um, Jim and Pam's breakdown!?!), I'm sure glad I did. I was reminded why I love The Office so very much. Thanks for the countless smiles, laughs, and episodes filled with George Foreman-grilled feet and rooftop grilled cheeses. Have a hanky and cocktail handy, because tonight's episode is gonna be long and hard...

When I stumbled upon Cat Seto's shop, Ferme á Papier, I found myself doing mental cartwheels (I was really good at them, too!). It was one of those moments when I wanted to instantly share her work with you. I couldn't wait; I wanted to hit the publish button right then and there. I just knew you'd flip when you saw her sweet illustrations, too! Ferme á Papier or Farm to Paper is an illustrated collection inspired by small celebrations. According to Cat, "the idea was conceived after her first trip to Europe last fall—where the culmination of Parisian hipsters, supernatural and biodynamic farms found their way into her work." I have a feeling this is one of those online shops I'll be frequenting. Cat's collection of paper goods couldn't be more perfect!

P.S. Some of you may have noticed that I customized my domain. I'm still waiting for all of the old comments from Disqus to update from previous posts. Bear with me! If you don't mind, please update your blogroll and readers. If your forget, it's alright—you'll automatically be redirected to www.onefinea.com. As always, thanks for stopping by!

Trivial Matters

via
As Flyboy spends the next week carb-loading, stretching, and preparing his gear for the Honolulu Triathlon on Sunday, I can't help but think of one trivial question: What's the appropriate attire for a non-athletic spectator at an event like this? As silly as it might sound, I know this is the sort of thing that Mindy would ponder.

Here's the deal, I'm super excited for FB. He's worked really hard, and it seems as though we've been waiting for May 19th to roll around for awhile. I think I'm more elated about the idea of having baked goods in the house again, but I digress. While I won't be running, cycling, or swimming, I'll be representing Team Fine — a duty I don't take lightly.

Five years ago, FB ran the St. Louis Marathon, and I packed the best survival kit. After all, preparedness is my middle name. The kit was complete with udder balm, a variety of band-aids, foot powder, extra socks, granola bars, safety pins, packages of flavored GU, etc. You better believe me when I say there would be no nipple chafing on my watch! For weeks leading up to his 26.2-mile adventure, I researched marathon tips, meal plans, and advice. Since I'm not the kind of girl that can run alongside him, I found other ways to support him (e.g. pep talks and poster board).

I remember showing up at the marathon and being in awe of all the participants; I get chills thinking about it! I have so much respect for anyone that embarks on this sort of feat. I'm that girl that watches the IRONMAN Championship every year and by the end of the broadcast I resemble Tammy Faye. My mascara has run all over my face because I've spent three hours inspired and misty-eyed by footage of the power and strength of the human spirit. It's exhilarating to watch, but I still don't have the slightest urge to participate in an organized athletic event. Ever.

On the flip side, I remember killing time at the St. Louis Marathon and looking around at the other spectators. The majority of the people were decked out in athletic attire, and they made it look so believable. Unfortunately, I still haven't quite mastered that look! I have great disdain for tennis shoes, and I can count on one hand how many times I've worn yoga pants in public. I felt a little overdressed, as though I was one of the few that put on m' face that morning. I hate feeling out of place, but you don't want to see Ashley au naturel. Trust me! And to show up bedecked in baubles, a cardigan, and ballet flats just seems preposterous! In a sea of sneakers and Under Armour, I undoubtedly looked out of place. Perhaps part of me still feels guilty and foolish for being surrounded by so many athletic overachievers while I hung out at the local Panera Bread, chowed down on fresh bagels, and sipped on a hot mocha with extra whip. Don't judge. It was Finals Week at Mizzou, and I was eating my feelings. It's totally normal.

As the triathlon nears, I can already see this scenario playing out as it did in St. Louis years ago. I'll swap Panera with Starbucks and devour an Old-Fashioned Cake Donut in lieu of a bagel. While I won't be working on Final Essays, I'll probably Instagram the Hawaiian scenery and plot the ways in which I'll help FB recharge his body with all sorts of fabulous calories. After all, he'll need to replenish the calories he burned with a post-race victory meal, and I'll be right there to help him with this task! It's rather selfless of me, I know. And while I'm still uncertain as to what my game-day getup will look like, I delight in the fact that as Flyboy tackles all three sports, I can be found waiting at the finish line, basking in the glory of my well-stocked survival kit.

Lurve Loave Luff

Let's get right to it, shall we?
Here's what made me feel all twitterpated, smile contagiously, giggle uncontrollably, etc.
  • iPhone Flower Wallpaper // How fabulous is this iPhone download from Parima Creative Studio? The best part? It's free! You'll want to download it stat.
  • Tassel Garland Kit // Add a little snazz and a dash of pizzazz to any party or room with this garland from Waiting on Martha. I think I could feel crafty with this kit.
  • Kate Spade 'The Great Gatsby' Clutch // Can't wait to see the movie. The soundtrack is amaze balls!
  • Country Club by Paul Rand // This typography is outstanding. I want to jump inside the polka dots.
  • Beach Defined // I have the entire weekend off, so we plan on soaking up the sun. Of course, we'll need the weather to cooperate to make this happen. Fingers crossed.
  • Eddie Bow Ballet Flats // When Kelly posted these on her blog yesterday, I was instantly smitten! I've never been a huge Tory Burch fan, but these could be my first purchase. The price is a bit steep (okay, a lot!), but that color is fabulous!!! Happy feet is an understatement.
  • Square Handle Watering Can // This makes me wish I had a green thumb...
  • Ponza Dog Canape Plate // Oh, Anthropologie and your adorable kitchenware. Stop being so cute already!
  • Shake Your Money Maker // I typically stick to shades of red, pink, and orange, but I might give this a shot. I'm a sucker for all things green.
  • Let's Dance Cuff // As if I really needed an excuse to dance, I'm loving this accessory and its cause.
  • Lip Sync-Off with John Krasinski and Jimmy Fallon // A friend shared this clip on Facebook, and it made my week! You bet I'm sporting a double-barrel grin when I watch it. Jim Halpert is adorable, and I'll probably cry my face off next week when I tune into The Office finale. Michael Scott, please make just one more appearance! I don't think that's too much to ask.
  • Soft and Chewy Snickers Chocolate Chip Cookies // Once Flyboy is done with his triathlon, you bet I'll be making a batch of this sinful sweetness. For now, I'll just share the recipe with you.
  • Blooming Monogram // This could be the most gorgeous DIY I've seen in awhile.
  • Makeup Musts // This week, I shared some of my makeup musts with Kelsey Nicole. Check it out!
  • Blog Questions // I figured it was time to pick your brains. Facebook pages for your blog. Yay or nay? I don't have one, and I'm not sure if I should or not. Also, I've considered purchasing my domain, but I'm not sure what to call it. I think One Fine Day is already taken. I chose smitten and swell when I created this blog because I didn't know what to call it and they're my favorite words. Makes complete sense, right?! Does anyone have any advice? Do I stick with my Twitter and Instagram username instead (onefinea)? Weigh in, if you'd like!

Cheers to a snazzy weekend!
Oh, and listen to your mother. She's probably right!

P.S. I apologize that things on the blog have been a little light over the past few days. This week has been crazy, and it's been a struggle to keep up around here. In fact, I know I owe some of you emails!!! Needless to say, I'm glad to welcome the weekend! Next week will be brimming with bloggie fabulosity. I promise.
